Man dies airplane engine: Police in Utah are investigating the death of a person who got caught in the engine of a Delta Airlines jet on the ground at Salt Lake City International Airport late Monday night.
According to the airport, the 30-year-old individual accessed the secure ramp area of the airport through an emergency exit, “went to the south side of the airport, where deicing operations were taking place, and got caught in an airplane engine that was not running.”
The airport stated that emergency responders found the person “unconscious and unable to be revived.” The exact cause of the person’s death is currently unclear.
According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, the individual has been identified as Kyler Effinger, a resident of Park City, Utah.
The department mentioned that Effinger had a boarding pass for a flight to Denver. Delta Airlines reported that Flight 2348, an Airbus A220 bound for San Francisco, had to return to the gate, where all 95 passengers disembarked. Eventually, the flight was canceled.
Police responded to the airport around 10 p.m. A statement from the police mentioned that a store manager inside the terminal called 911 to report an altercation with a passenger. The details of the altercation are still under investigation.
Police said that the passenger, Effinger, exited through one of the emergency exit doors inside the terminal and went to an external ramp area outside the airport.
The statement mentioned that during the search, a pilot reported seeing the individual. A few minutes later, officers found personal belongings, including clothes and shoes, along with the person on the runway.
Police stated that about 10 minutes into the search, dispatchers informed them that the person was on one of the aircraft de-icing pads, where he walked under the plane and reached the engine. Police then instructed air traffic controllers to shut down the engine.
When officers arrived at the aircraft, they found Effinger unconscious and partially inside one of the wing-mounted engines that were still turning, according to the police. An inspection of the specific phases of engine operation is underway.
The statement mentioned, “SLCPD officers and airport operations removed the person from the engine intake cover, secured the scene, initiated life-saving efforts, and requested emergency medical services.” CPR and naloxone administration were part of those efforts.
According to the police, Effinger died at the scene. The department stated that an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and manner of his death, and medical examiners may obtain toxicology reports.
The airport police emphasized that the incident did not impact other operations at the airport.
Salt Lake City Police said they are investigating the incident, and federal aviation administration, National Transportation Safety Board, and Transportation Security Administration are also involved.
The National Transportation Safety Board stated that it is “gathering information” about the incident but indicated that local police are handling the investigation.
