The nightclub, known as Masquerade, was situated on the ground and basement levels of a 16-story residential building in the Besiktas district, located on the European side of the city along the Bosphorus. The fire has been successfully extinguished.
Governor Davut Gul addressed reporters at the site, stating that the cause of the fire is currently under investigation, with indications suggesting that the victims were likely involved in the renovation work.
Reports from private NTV television revealed that some of the victims succumbed to their injuries in hospitals, where they were transported by ambulances.
Authorities have detained six individuals for questioning, including club managers and one person responsible for overseeing the renovations, as announced by Governor Gul’s office.
The nightclub had been closed for renovations during the holy month of Ramadan, with the owners striving to complete the work before the upcoming Eid holiday, which follows the month of fasting, according to NTV.
As a safety precaution, the area has been cordoned off by the police, and utilities such as power and natural gas to the neighborhood have been disconnected.
Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu stated that authorities are conducting a comprehensive inspection of the entire building to evaluate its safety status.
Multiple firefighting and medical teams were dispatched to the scene, Mayor Imamoglu added.
