Walmart Settlement: Shopping at Walmart might come with an unexpected benefit soon. The retail giant has agreed to a $45 million settlement in response to a class-action lawsuit accusing them of misleading customers into paying more for certain items. If approved by a Florida court in June, eligible customers could receive up to $500 in compensation.

The settlement covers purchases made between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024, at Walmart stores in the United States or Puerto Rico. Specifically, it includes purchases of “weighted goods” such as meat and seafood products sold by weight, as well as bagged citrus fruits.

To be eligible, customers need to file a claim, even though those who don’t file will still be affected by the settlement.

Customers who purchased bagged citrus fruits (such as oranges, grapefruits, and tangerines) and weighted goods (like meat and seafood) at Walmart stores during the specified period are eligible for compensation. The maximum compensation per customer is $500, though this amount may change based on the total number of claims received.

How to Claim Compensation?

To claim compensation, eligible customers must submit a claim by June 5. They’ll need to provide proof of purchase, such as receipts, or other documentation substantiating their purchases. Customers can receive 2% of the total cost of their eligible purchases, capped at $500. Even those without receipts can claim compensation by providing attestations of their purchases.

Once claims are submitted, objections addressed, and opt-outs processed, a claims administrator will determine eligibility and payment amounts. The settlement will then undergo a final approval hearing on June 12. If approved, payments will be processed promptly, though it may take several months for the settlement to become final and for claims to be processed.
