Notre Dame was left out of the final College Football Playoff rankings, and athletic director Pete Bevacqua called the decision “an absolute joke.” He said the committee misled the team by keeping them in the top 12 for weeks, only to drop them despite not playing for two weeks.
Miami moved ahead of Notre Dame because of their head-to-head win, even though both teams had the same record and neither played recently. Bevacqua said the process “stole” the playoff from the players and argued weekly ranking shows are pointless. ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit also criticized the CFP system, saying the weekly rankings were misleading since Miami was always behind Notre Dame until the final reveal.
