Matt Kuchar has apologized after an unusual finish at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina. On Monday, Kuchar returned to Sedgefield Country Club to complete his final hole, making him the only golfer on the course.
On Sunday, as daylight faded, Matt Kuchar found himself out of contention when he reached the 18th hole. His tee shot veered far left, landing in a tricky spot. Instead of continuing, he marked his ball and chose to finish the next morning.
It took Matt Kuchar just six minutes on Monday to complete the hole, securing a par. He got a line-of-sight relief from a scoreboard near the green, which allowed him to drop the ball in the fairway. The 46-year-old American ended up tied for 12th place, earning $134,695. A bogey would have dropped his earnings to just over $77,000.
“Nobody wants to be that guy who shows up alone, finishing just half a hole,” Kuchar said. “I apologize to the tournament organizers and everyone who attended. I know it stinks. I understand the inconvenience, and I’m sorry for causing it.”
Matt Kuchar’s solo finish may have been brief, but it certainly made an impression.
