Lionel Messi breaks Diego Maradona’s record for most goals in the FIFA World Cup

Argentina’s star footballer Lionel Messi scored 9 goals in the World Cup, surpassing legendary Diego Maradona who scored 8 goals. Messi did this by scoring a goal in the match against Australia.

This goal makes Lionel Messi the second-highest goalscorer for Argentina at the World Cup. Gabriel Batistuta is one goal ahead of Messi.

Argentina beat Australia 2-1 in the round of 16. Goals from captain Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez sent Argentina into the quarter-finals. It was captain Lionel Messi’s 1000th match. Therefore, this match has different importance. Messi was awarded the man of the match award in this match against Australia.

Messi is the third player to score in consecutive World Cup matches for Argentina. On 16 October 2004, Messi started playing for Argentina. Between his first match and his 1000th match, he set many outstanding records. Lionel Messi is named among the most popular players in the world.
