Lewis Hamilton has apologized to Ferrari after a rough weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion admitted that his performance was not good enough for the team.
Lewis Hamilton had a poor qualifying session and was knocked out in Q1. He didn’t score any points in the sprint race. However, he made a strong comeback in the main race on Sunday, finishing seventh after starting from the back.
“Sorry about this weekend guys, losing you points,” Hamilton said on the team radio after the race. “I’ll work harder to come back stronger at the next race. Great job on the strategy and pit stops.”
Despite the rough start, Hamilton praised the team’s efforts. He spoke highly of the strategy and pit work, and said he would bounce back in the next race.
Ferrari’s New Upgrades Show Promise
Ferrari introduced a new upgrade package in Belgium, aiming to catch up with McLaren. While Hamilton struggled, his teammate Charles Leclerc had a much better weekend. Leclerc secured a podium finish, which gave the team a big morale boost.
“Clearly the car is improving because Charles was able to hold on to another podium,” Hamilton said. “So I’m still going to work hard next week.”
Lewis Hamilton had high hopes coming into the weekend. He previously said he didn’t want to follow in the footsteps of other champions like Fernando Alonso or Sebastian Vettel—both of whom failed to win titles with Ferrari. The team hasn’t won a drivers’ title since 2007 or a constructors’ title since 2008.
Lewis Hamilton Reflects on His Performance
Hamilton said the weekend didn’t go as planned, especially on Friday and Saturday. While some outside factors played a role on Friday, he admitted Saturday’s struggles were his own fault.
“It was tough because that’s not what the team deserves,” Hamilton said. “But I recovered today. We outscored Mercedes on points, which is great.”
Despite his frustration, Hamilton ended the weekend on a somewhat positive note by helping Ferrari beat Mercedes in points.
What’s Next in F1?
Formula 1 returns this Sunday with the Hungarian Grand Prix before the summer break. Ferrari fans will be hoping the team continues to build on the upgrades—and that Hamilton bounces back stronger.
