Apple is reportedly in the process of developing its own chip specifically designed to power artificial intelligence (AI) software within data centers, as per the Wall Street Journal‘s report on Monday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The tech giant, which has been trailing behind its competitors in AI development, has been avoiding questions regarding its plans for this technology.
CEO Tim Cook, in an interview with Reuters, expressed confidence in Apple’s prospects in generative AI and mentioned significant investments being made in this area.
Internally dubbed as Project ACDC (Apple Chips in Data Center), the initiative aims to utilize Apple’s expertise in chip design to enhance its server infrastructure.
While Project ACDC has been underway for several years, it remains uncertain whether or when Apple will officially unveil it, according to the report.
The focus of Apple’s server chip will likely be on executing AI models, also known as inference, rather than training them, the report added.
The company has been collaborating closely with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) to design and kickstart production of these chips, although it’s unclear if definitive results have been achieved, the WSJ reported.
