Fourth seed Alexander Zverev showcased his powerful serve in a hard-fought first-round match at the U.S. Open on Monday. The German tennis star triumphed over fellow countryman Maximilian Marterer with a 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Alexander Zverev dominated with his serve, firing 21 aces and winning 79% of his first serve points. Despite his strong performance, the unseeded Marterer, who entered the tournament as a “lucky loser” after Emil Ruusuvuori’s withdrawal, managed to claim the second set in a close tiebreak.
The match opened with Alexander Zverev breaking Marterer’s serve in the first game, quickly taking control of the first set. However, Marterer fought back in the second set, pushing Zverev to a tiebreak, where he ultimately secured the set.
Frustration showed on Alexander Zverev’s part as he began the third set, tossing his racket after committing one of his 44 unforced errors. However, he quickly regained his composure and overpowered Marterer to take the third and fourth sets, sealing his victory.
Alexander Zverev’s win now sets up a second-round match against either Frenchman Alexandre Muller or Australia’s Adam Walton, who will face off later on Monday.
This impressive start to the U.S. Open highlights Zverev’s form as he aims for a deep run in the tournament.
