Primoz Roglic, a three-time former champion, showcased his strength in the Vuelta a España by winning the first mountain stage. The Slovenian rider powered through the scorching 170km fourth stage, which took the peloton from Portugal into Spain for the first time this year.
The fierce climb to Pico Villuercas tested the riders’ endurance, but Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) proved his mettle. In the final moments, he surged past Lennert van Eetvelt (Lotto Dstny) to claim victory.
With this win, Primoz Roglic not only secured the stage but also took over the overall race lead, donning the coveted red jersey. He pushed Belgium’s Wout Van Aert out of the top spot.
This stage was the first real test for the general classification contenders. Roglic made his intentions clear with a commanding performance.
Meanwhile, Portugal’s Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) finished strong, coming in third on the stage and now sits second overall, just eight seconds behind Roglic.
The Vuelta a España is heating up, and with Primoz Roglic in the red jersey, the competition is only getting fiercer.
