NorthEast United achieved their first-ever trophy with a dramatic comeback and a thrilling penalty shootout win against the football giants Mohun Bagan in the 2024 Durand Cup final.
The first half saw Mohun Bagan dominate the game. They capitalized on their early advantage with a penalty after Sahal Abdul Samad was fouled in the box. Jason Cummings converted the penalty with precision.
Despite impressive moments from MS Jithin—who was later named MVP of the tournament—and a stylish finish from Sahal Abdul Samad, Mohun Bagan seemed to be in control. Liston Colaco added to their lead with a superb volley from a precise Anirudh Thapa pass.
In the second half, NorthEast United made key tactical changes. Coach Juan Pedro Benali brought on Guillermo Fernandez, shifting the dynamics of the game. Guillermo and Alaeddine Ajaraie, who moved to the left, created a powerful attack.
Ajaraie’s first goal came when he took advantage of a second ball and fired a stunning shot from the edge of the box. Moments later, he set up Guillermo, who volleyed home from a tough angle to equalize.
NorthEast United continued to press, dominating the second half, but Mohun Bagan held strong, leading the match to a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, NorthEast United’s Gurmeet Singh became the hero. He made crucial saves against Liston Colaco and Subasish Bose, securing a 4-3 win on penalties and sealing a historic victory for NorthEast United.
