Chelsea is closing in on a deal to sign Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho on loan for the season, a source told ESPN. The agreement includes an obligation for Chelsea to make the move permanent next summer for around £25 million ($32.8 million).
Sancho, the 24-year-old England forward, has been sidelined at Manchester United, having not featured in a competitive game for over a year. He was excluded from Erik ten Hag’s squad for the first two Premier League matches against Fulham and Brighton this season. Despite having two years left on his contract at Old Trafford, it appears his time there is nearing an end.
Last season, Sancho spent the latter half on loan at his former club Borussia Dortmund after a public fallout with Ten Hag led to his exile from United’s first-team squad. Although he returned to training this summer and played a key role during the U.S. preseason tour, he has been given the green light to move to Premier League rivals Chelsea.
Manchester United initially aimed for a permanent deal for Sancho, valuing him at around £40 million. However, that price became a significant obstacle. With Juventus also in the race for Sancho’s signature, Chelsea quickly moved ahead after talks with the Italian club broke down on Thursday.
Rapid progress was made in discussions between Chelsea and United on Wednesday, paving the way for the final agreement. Now, it seems only a matter of time before Sancho trades Old Trafford for Stamford Bridge.
