Ivan Toney, the star striker of Brentford, has officially signed with Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli. The transfer was confirmed by both clubs on Friday.
Earlier that day, ESPN revealed Ivan Toney’s agreement on a lucrative three-year deal with Al Ahli, valued at $53 million. The 27-year-old had drawn interest from several top Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United. However, Toney chose a fresh start in Saudi Arabia.
Brentford had fought hard to keep Ivan Toney in their squad. But with just a year left on his contract, the west London club decided it was time to let him go. This move prevents the risk of losing him for free later on.
Brentford head coach Thomas Frank praised Toney’s time at the club. “Working with Ivan over the last four years has been a pleasure,” Frank said. “He has averaged more than one goal every two games, which is an incredible achievement. On the pitch, he’s been a great goalscorer, link-up player, and leader. “He has driven himself and the entire team to perform at their best.”
Toney’s contribution to Brentford has been remarkable. He scored 72 goals in 141 matches, including helping Brentford secure promotion to the Premier League in the 2020-21 season.
However, Toney faced a setback in May 2023 when the English Football Association (FA) banned him from all football-related activities for eight months. The ban was due to 262 breaches of betting regulations. His suspension was later reduced after being diagnosed with a gambling addiction.
Despite the challenges, Ivan Toney’s move to Al Ahli marks a new chapter in his career. His goal-scoring talent and leadership qualities will now be showcased on a new stage in Saudi Arabia.
