Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is downplaying personal accolades despite becoming the first Premier League coach since Pep Guardiola to win his opening three away matches.
After guiding his side to a commanding 3-0 victory over West Ham on Saturday, the Italian emphasized that the focus remains on Chelsea’s continued growth rather than short-term records.
Maresca, who previously served as an assistant under Guardiola at Manchester City, was quick to acknowledge that his squad’s development is far from complete. However, he believes the team is steadily embracing his methods and philosophy.
“The players are buying into the idea, and the style we’ve introduced since I arrived has been excellent,” Maresca said post-match. “We’re on the right track, but it’s going to be a long haul.”
Steady Progress for Chelsea
The win against West Ham marks another step in Chelsea’s efforts to reclaim their status as one of England’s top clubs. Following a disappointing 12th-place finish two seasons ago and a sixth-place finish last season, the Blues are eager to restore their position as Premier League and European powerhouses.
Chelsea’s American owners, Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, were present at London Stadium and shared in the post-match celebrations with the team. Despite rumors of tension between the two, Maresca described the atmosphere in the dressing room as upbeat.
“They came down after the match and were very happy. Everyone is focused on seeing how we improve as a team, and we’re starting to see that progress,” Maresca explained. “Even today, there were areas where we could have done better — in both attack and defense — but overall, it’s a positive step.”
New Faces Shine
Among Chelsea’s recent arrivals, winger Jadon Sancho and defender Tosin Adarabioyo both made their first starts for the club, adding more talent to an already deep squad. Maresca stressed that while integrating new players takes time, the team is gradually beginning to gel.
“It’s inevitable,” stated the Italian coach. “The most important thing is how the players who have come in work together as a group. That’s what will define our success moving forward.”
West Ham Struggles Continue
On the other side, West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui was left frustrated by his team’s defensive mistakes, which allowed Chelsea to take an early lead. Nicolas Jackson netted twice for the Blues in the opening 20 minutes, with Cole Palmer adding a third shortly after the break.
Lopetegui acknowledged the home fans’ frustration, but urged them to be patient as his squad continues to adapt.
“Lopetegui expressed confidence that the team would get better over time.” “We feel the fans’ support, and we share their ambition. Today was tough, but I believe we’ll have better days ahead.”
