Atalanta missed numerous opportunities as they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at home against a resolute Celtic in their Champions League clash on Wednesday.
Despite dominating possession and creating waves of chances, the Italian side failed to find a breakthrough against Celtic’s disciplined defense.
Facing a Scottish opponent for the first time in European competition, Atalanta were in control for most of the match. They registered a staggering 23 shots, seven of which were on target, yet couldn’t convert that dominance into goals.
The story of the night, however, was Celtic’s remarkable defensive organization, particularly impressive after their 7-1 thrashing by Borussia Dortmund in the previous round. Determined to avoid another heavy defeat, Celtic sat deep, relying on a mix of tactical discipline and some fortunate moments to earn a valuable point.
Atalanta, sitting in 12th with five points after three matches, were left frustrated, knowing that they let a golden opportunity slip. Meanwhile, Celtic, now with four points and in 18th place, will be pleased with a hard-fought draw.
The Italian side came closest to scoring in the first half when Mario Pasalic’s powerful header crashed against the crossbar. Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel was exceptional throughout, making several critical saves to deny Atalanta’s attackers.
Despite controlling the second half, Atalanta’s frustration grew as Celtic’s defense held firm. For all their possession, the hosts lacked the sharpness to convert their chances, allowing Celtic to escape Bergamo with a hard-earned draw.
Schmeichel, speaking after the match, credited Celtic’s defensive approach: “It’s never easy coming here, but a point was well-earned. We knew we’d have to be cautious with Atalanta’s man-to-man system, so we played smarter, took fewer risks, and it paid off.”
The result leaves both sides still in the hunt for progression, though Atalanta will feel this was a missed chance to assert their dominance.
