Arsenal started their Premier League title campaign with a solid 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at home on Saturday. Goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka secured the win, giving Arsenal a strong start to the season.
In the summer heat, Arsenal didn’t deliver their most fluid performance. However, Mikel Arteta’s team, widely seen as the main challengers to Manchester City’s dominance, earned the points they needed.
Havertz opened the scoring in the 25th minute, heading in a well-placed cross from Saka. But Arsenal only truly settled after Saka doubled the lead late in the game with a precise finish.
Wolves had their moments, with Rayan Aït-Nouri and Rodrigo Gomes coming close. But they couldn’t get past Arsenal’s goalkeeper, David Raya, when the score was still 1-0.
Arteta expressed his satisfaction after the game. “I’m really happy. The first game always brings some uncertainty. We had a shaky moment after going 1-0 up, but Saka’s goal put us in control. The boys did an unbelievable job.”
Three months ago, Arsenal narrowly missed out on their first English title in 20 years, ending the season with a tense final day against Everton. But the atmosphere at the Emirates was much calmer this time, both on and off the pitch. Arsenal won without having to push themselves too hard.
Wolves, with new signings Jørgen Strand Larsen and Gomes making their debuts, enjoyed possession but didn’t pose much of a threat. Arsenal, who have finished as runners-up to City for the last two seasons, dominated the first half. Saka was given time to set up Havertz, who headed the ball into the corner, leaving Wolves’ keeper José Sá with no chance.
Arsenal became careless at times, and Wolves almost equalized when Hwang Hee-Chan’s cross found Larsen. But Raya was quick to react and made a crucial save.
After the break, Arsenal worked hard but secured the points when Saka, their standout player, cut in from the right and fired a left-footed shot past Sá.
Havertz praised his teammate, saying, “Saka is unbelievable. There aren’t many players like him in the world, and he’s still so young.”
This win sets the tone for Arsenal’s title challenge, giving their fans hope for the season ahead.
