The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced that Russell Wilson will start as their quarterback in the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. This decision was reported by Jay Glazer of Fox Sports.
Russell Wilson, who was let go by the Denver Broncos after two seasons of a five-year, $245 million deal, joined the Steelers as a free agent. He competed for the starting spot with veteran Justin Fields. Fields was acquired from the Chicago Bears, who chose to draft USC’s Caleb Williams with the top pick in April’s NFL Draft.
As Russell Wilson nears his 36th birthday, his performance remains a question mark. Last season with the Broncos, he played 15 games, completing 66.4% of his passes for 3,070 yards. He had a 26-to-8 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Despite his solid numbers, the Broncos struggled with downfield passing and failed to make the most of intermediate to deep throws.
Russell Wilson averaged just 204.7 passing yards per game last season, the lowest since his rookie year with the Seattle Seahawks in 2012.
With a new team and a fresh start, Wilson might find renewed success. However, the effectiveness of the Steelers’ passing game is still uncertain as they prepare for Week 1 against the Falcons.
