Jay Cutler, a former NFL quarterback, was arrested on Thursday following a minor car accident and charged with driving under the influence (DUI) and possession of a handgun.
The incident occurred in Franklin, where police responded to a report of a collision. According to the Franklin Police Department, Cutler’s vehicle rear-ended another car. Officers noticed signs of intoxication, including the smell of alcohol on his breath, bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech.
Jay Cutler, 41, refused to perform a field sobriety test. Officers obtained a search warrant and transported him to a nearby hospital, where his blood was drawn for further testing.
In addition to DUI, authorities reported that two firearms were found inside Cutler’s vehicle, one of which was a loaded handgun. This resulted in an additional charge for possession of a handgun while under the influence.
Jay Cutler also faces charges for failure to exercise due care in avoiding the collision and violating Tennessee’s implied consent law by refusing a sobriety test. All the charges are classified as misdemeanors or civil offenses under state law.
After being processed, Cutler was released on a $5,000 bond.
Cutler’s NFL career spanned 12 seasons, during which he played for the Denver Broncos, Chicago Bears, and Miami Dolphins. The quarterback recorded 35,133 passing yards and 227 touchdowns before retiring in 2017.
Jay Cutler was also previously married to reality TV personality Kristin Cavallari. The couple, who share three children, announced their divorce in 2020.
This recent arrest brings a troubling spotlight to the retired athlete, who has largely stayed out of public controversy since his NFL career ended. Further legal proceedings will likely determine the outcome of these charges.
