Gable Steveson’s dream of becoming a Buffalo Bill is on hold, for now. The Olympic gold medalist wrestler was released by the team on Tuesday as they trimmed their roster down to 53 players.
Despite his impressive wrestling credentials, Gable Steveson, a newcomer to football, faced an uphill battle. He signed with the Bills in May after a stint in the WWE, but with no prior football experience, making the starting lineup was a long shot.
Gable Steveson did see some action during the preseason at defensive tackle, but his lack of experience ultimately showed. However, there’s still a chance for him to stay with the Bills. According to NFL.com insider Mike Garafolo, Steveson could land on the team’s practice squad if he clears waivers.
Gable Steveson’s wrestling pedigree is undeniable. He’s a 2020 Tokyo Olympic gold medalist, a three-time Big Ten champion, and a two-time NCAA champion during his college days at the University of Minnesota. After a short-lived wrestling career with the WWE, he set his sights on the NFL, signing with the Bills in May.
While not making the initial cut, Steveson’s athleticism and work ethic could still earn him a spot on the practice squad. This wouldn’t be the end of the road, but rather a chance to learn the ropes and potentially make the 53-man roster in the future.
