The Los Angeles Rams have parted ways with linebacker Ernest Jones IV, sending him to the Tennessee Titans in a trade finalized on Tuesday. The move comes after months of contract negotiations between Jones and the Rams failed to yield a new deal.

Ernest Jones, a 24-year-old veteran, was seeking a significant pay raise from the Rams this offseason. Despite his impressive performance and leadership on the team’s defense, the two sides were unable to reach an agreement on a new contract.

A third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Ernest Jones quickly established himself as a key contributor to the Rams’ defense. His exceptional play earned him praise from the team’s general manager, Les Snead, who called him the “leader of the defense.”

In the 2023 season, Ernest Jones led the Rams in tackles with 145, while also contributing 4.5 sacks, six pass defenses, and 14 tackles for loss. His consistent performance and dedication to the team made him a valuable asset to the Rams’ defense.

However, the lack of a new contract created uncertainty surrounding Jones’ future in Los Angeles. The Rams and Ernest Jones explored various options to keep him with the team, but ultimately, they were unable to find common ground.

“I’ve worked incredibly hard over the past three years, and I feel I deserve fair compensation,” Jones told the OC Register in July. “While I love living in Los Angeles and want to raise my family here, I understand that the business side of football sometimes dictates decisions beyond our control.”

The trade will see Jones and a 2026 sixth-round pick head to Tennessee in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick. The Titans are hoping that Jones can bolster their defense and contribute to their playoff aspirations.
