Stephen Curry, the Golden State Warriors’ superstar guard, has inked a one-year contract extension worth $62.6 million. The deal, confirmed by his agent Jeff Austin of Octagon to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, ensures Curry will remain with the Warriors until the end of the 2026-27 season.
Stephen Curry’s Record-Breaking Earnings
With this extension, Stephen Curry joins the elite club of NBA players surpassing $500 million in career earnings, alongside LeBron James, Paul George, and Kevin Durant. The 36-year-old had two years left on his previous four-year, $215.4 million contract, which he signed in August 2021.
Due to the NBA’s over-38 rule, Curry was only eligible for a one-year extension this offseason, as the rule restricts teams from offering contracts of four years or more to players who are or will be 38 years old during the contract period.
A Warrior for Life
Stephen Curry has always been vocal about his commitment to the Warriors, the only NBA franchise he has ever played for. “I’ve always said I want to be a Warrior for life,” Curry told Andscape in July. “At this stage in my career, I feel like that’s possible.”
However, he added that staying with a competitive team is essential. “If the team were at the bottom of the league and I stayed just to stay, that would be tough for me,” he admitted. “But I don’t see that happening.”
Golden State’s New Era
Keeping Stephen Curry for as long as possible has been Golden State’s top priority this summer. General Manager Mike Dunleavy was confident about extending Curry’s contract, stating in July that the team would “do whatever it takes” to keep their star player. Dunleavy emphasized, “We will give him whatever he wants.”
Despite the loss of Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks after 13 seasons, the Warriors remain focused on making a deep playoff run. They plan to rely more on young talent, including Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski, and Trayce Jackson-Davis. Kuminga, now entering his fourth season, could also secure a substantial extension worth up to $215 million over five years.
A New Supporting Cast
In addition to their young core, the Warriors have brought in experienced players like Buddy Hield, Kyle Anderson, and De’Anthony Melton to strengthen their lineup. Meanwhile, veteran Draymond Green continues to provide leadership on and off the court.
Curry’s Stellar Performance
Last season, Curry averaged 26.4 points per game, shooting 40.8% from beyond the arc, with 5.1 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game in his 15th season. As a 10-time All-Star, two-time MVP, one-time Finals MVP, and Olympic gold medalist, Curry remains the heart and soul of the Warriors. With him leading the charge, the team believes they always have a shot at greatness.
By securing Curry’s extension, the Warriors are not just looking to the future but doubling down on their present, hoping for another championship run.
