The Women’s T20 World Cup, originally set to take place in Bangladesh this October, has been relocated to the United Arab Emirates due to recent political unrest and violence in the South Asian nation.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the decision on Tuesday, citing safety concerns.Several participating countries issued travel advisories against visiting Bangladesh, which made it impossible to hold the tournament there as originally planned.
Bangladesh has been in turmoil for weeks, with widespread protests and political instability. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently fled the country, and an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has taken charge.
Geoff Allardice, ICC Chief Executive, expressed regret over the situation. “It’s disappointing that we can’t hold the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Cricket Board would have put on a fantastic event.
However, with the travel advisories, it just wasn’t feasible. They will still hold the hosting rights, and we look forward to bringing an ICC event to Bangladesh soon,” Allardice said.
The tournament, now scheduled to run from October 3 to 20, will see 10 teams competing for the coveted title in the UAE. This upcoming tournament will mark the ninth edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup.
