Boston Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen is set to make Major League Baseball history on Monday. The unusual event will occur when Jansen plays for two teams in a single game, as confirmed by a Red Sox spokesperson.
The game in question is a resumption of a match between the Red Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays, originally suspended on June 26 due to weather. This game will resume at Fenway Park, and Jansen, who was a Blue Jay at the time, is now a member of the Red Sox.
When the game picks up, Jansen will be up to bat in the top of the second inning. Despite being traded to Boston, he will start this unique game as a Blue Jay, but quickly switch teams. The Red Sox will pinch-hit for him and then use him as a defensive replacement for catcher Reese McGuire, who was recently designated for assignment.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed that Jansen will be catching. “We’re about to make history,” Cora said. “He’ll be catching in Game 1, and we’re excited about it.”
Jansen himself called the situation an “oddity” during an appearance on the Sportsnet podcast “Blair and Barker.” He shared his excitement about the rare chance to make history in baseball.
Later on Monday, Jansen will join the Red Sox for a four-game series against the Blue Jays, adding another chapter to this historic and memorable day in MLB history.
