The English Football Association (FA) has announced an investigation into the treatment of England supporters during their team’s 3-0 UEFA Nations League victory over Greece at the Olympic Stadium in Athens on Thursday.

Reports from British media allege that Greek police used tear gas and riot shields to manage fans attempting to enter the stadium, sparking concerns over crowd control measures.

An FA spokesperson addressed the issue, stating, “We are aware that some of our fans faced challenging circumstances outside the stadium. We are actively gathering more details to understand what transpired.”

The Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) also voiced its concerns, condemning the situation. “While the team delivered a fantastic result on the pitch, incidents like this highlight the ongoing need to protect our fans from undue risks off it,” the FSA remarked in a statement.

Witnesses reported chaotic scenes as Greek authorities allegedly struggled to manage the flow of England supporters. Some fans claimed they were left waiting for long periods outside the gates, with tensions escalating as they tried to gain entry.

Efforts to obtain a response from Greek police have so far been unsuccessful.

This incident casts a shadow over what was otherwise a memorable night for England, as goals from key players secured a dominant win. However, the FA’s inquiry signals a commitment to ensuring the safety and dignity of their fans at international fixtures.

More updates are expected as investigations progress.
