MotoGP’s future has been secured for decades to come. In a groundbreaking move, MotoGP promoter Dorna Sports and the sport’s governing body, Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), announced on Thursday the extension of their partnership until 2060.
This long-term deal solidifies Dorna’s hold over the prestigious motorcycle racing series, a position it has held since 1992.
The announcement follows recent developments involving Liberty Media, the U.S.-based entity behind Formula One. In April, Liberty Media revealed a $4.66 billion acquisition of a controlling stake in Dorna. The deal, expected to be finalized by the end of 2024, will see Liberty Media owning 86% of Dorna’s equity, with Dorna’s current management team retaining the remaining 14%.
Carmelo Ezpeleta, Dorna’s Chief Executive, expressed his excitement about the extended agreement with the FIM. “Through this partnership, we’re committed to guiding MotoGP’s development towards a sustainable and visionary future.
We’ve spent decades crafting a sport that resonates with millions worldwide, and now, with this renewed commitment, we have the platform to elevate it to even greater heights.”
The deal represents not just a continuation but a new chapter for MotoGP. With Liberty Media’s involvement, the sport is poised to tap into new markets, improve its fan engagement strategies, and innovate its media offerings. The extension with FIM ensures that the sport will maintain its core values and traditions while expanding its global reach.
For MotoGP fans, this is a reassuring message: the sport they love will be in the hands of experienced leaders, ensuring stability and growth for years to come.
