The Minnesota Vikings have signed quarterback Brett Rypien and waived Jaren Hall, marking a significant roster change on Thursday.
Brett Rypien, who is 28 years old, joins the Vikings as their third-string quarterback. He will be positioned behind Sam Darnold and Nick Mullens. Before this move, Rypien had a brief stint with the Chicago Bears, signing a one-year contract on March 13, but was released just a day before joining the Vikings.
Brett Rypien joined the NFL in 2019 as an undrafted free agent, signing with the Denver Broncos. Over his career, he has made four starts and accumulated 950 passing yards, with four touchdowns and nine interceptions in ten games.
Last season, Brett Rypien played for the Rams in a game against the Green Bay Packers, which ended in a 20-3 loss. He completed 13 of 28 passes, gaining 130 yards and throwing one interception. Shortly after, he was let go and had short-term roles with the Seattle Seahawks and New York Jets.
Rypien is also known for his college career at Boise State, where he set the Mountain West career passing record with 13,578 yards. He is the nephew of Mark Rypien, the Super Bowl MVP who played 11 NFL seasons and had a notable career with Washington.
In contrast, Hall, 26, who was drafted by the Vikings in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft from BYU, has been waived after a season where he played three games and started two. He threw for 168 yards and one interception.
The Vikings are making these changes after rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, suffered a season-ending knee injury.
