Travis Kelce opened up about one of the Kansas City Chiefs’ most talked-about plays of the preseason during the season premiere of his show, New Heights, on Wednesday.
The tight end confessed to his brother, Jason Kelce, that he was the one who “messed up” what became a highlight-worthy moment in quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ career.
In the Chiefs’ preseason matchup against the Detroit Lions on August 19, Mahomes delivered a slick, behind-the-back pass to Travis Kelce—a move he had never tried before in a live game. The jaw-dropping play quickly went viral, but Kelce was quick to own up to his part in the confusion.
Travis Kelce explained that the lack of preparation time in the preseason contributed to the mishap. “In preseason, you don’t have a full week to prep for a game plan,” he said. “I wasn’t completely in sync with the game plan, and Mahomes seemed to pick up on it as soon as I crossed the line of scrimmage.” He had to improvise.”
Kelce praised Mahomes for his ability to turn a mistake into magic. “That’s why we love playing with Pat Mahomes,” he added. “Even when you make a mistake, he always finds a way to fix it. I noticed Pat pulling the ball and beginning to roll out.” I thought he might need my help, so I turned around—and there he was, in mid-motion, doing a behind-the-back pass. It was like watching a sports card come to life in slow motion.”
Despite the error, the fans seemed to love the spontaneity of the play. Travis Kelce made sure to get the first down, turning what could have been a blunder into a memorable moment.
With moments like these, it’s no wonder fans are excited to see what more magic the Chiefs’ dynamic duo will create on the field this upcoming NFL season.
