In a surprising move, the Kansas City Chiefs have released wide receiver Kadarius Toney, as reported by Adam Schefter. Toney, who was among the final roster cuts, has seen his stint with the Chiefs come to an end as the team finalizes its roster at 53 players ahead of the new NFL season.
Toney, drafted by the New York Giants as the 20th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, had a modest rookie year. He recorded 39 receptions for 420 yards but didn’t score any touchdowns.
His time with the Giants was short-lived; midway through his second season, he was traded to the Chiefs for a third- and a sixth-round pick. Although he contributed to the Chiefs’ journey to Super Bowl LVII, his impact was limited.
Last season, Kadarius Toney played a career-high 13 games, catching 27 passes. However, he was benched for the last three regular-season games and did not feature in the playoffs. The Chiefs went on to win back-to-back Super Bowls.
Despite expectations that Toney would play a key role this offseason, the situation changed. Reports from ESPN indicated that Toney worked out with quarterback Patrick Mahomes in Texas. Training camp hints from head coach Andy Reid suggested a potential role for Toney as a running back.
However, with the return of JuJu Smith-Schuster, Toney’s spot on the team became uncertain, ultimately leading to his release.
The future is now wide open for Kadarius Toney as he looks for his next opportunity in the NFL.
