Zverev, the 2021 Cincinnati champion and world number four, seemed close to taking the first set. However, Jannik Sinner broke back to level at 5-5, leading to a rain-interrupted tiebreaker where the Italian eventually prevailed on his third set point with a backhand volley.
The second set saw both players trading early breaks before Zverev held serve to go up 6-5 and ultimately leveled the match when Sinner’s forehand smash found the net.
