The Detroit Tigers have brought back Spencer Torkelson, their top pick from the 2020 MLB draft. The 25-year-old first baseman was recalled from Triple-A Toledo early Saturday morning, just in time for the Tigers’ game against the New York Yankees.
Spencer Torkelson started this season with the Tigers but was sent to Toledo on June 2. He had played 54 games with the Tigers before being sent down. Last season, he showed promise by hitting 31 home runs and driving in 94 runs, though his batting average was just .233. This season, before being sent to Toledo, he hit .201 with four home runs and 18 RBIs in those 54 games. He also struck out 56 times.
While with the Toledo Mud Hens, Spencer Torkelson hit .239 with 11 home runs, 43 RBIs, and a .799 OPS in 58 games. His OPS with the Tigers earlier in the season was a much lower .597.
To make space for Spencer Torkelson, the Tigers sent Bligh Madris, a first baseman and outfielder, to Toledo. It was a busy Friday for the Tigers, who also made several other roster changes. They called up infielders Jace Jung and Trey Sweeney from Toledo, sent outfielder Akil Baddoo down to Triple-A, and designated left-hander Easton Lucas and infielder Gio Urshela for assignment.
Spencer Torkelson’s return to the Tigers adds excitement to their lineup, especially with a big game against the Yankees.
