IPL Owners to Rename Hundred Teams with Minority Stakes: A Big Brand Play?

IPL Owners Teams Renaming
Starting next month, Indian Premier League (IPL) owners will have the chance to rename teams in England’s The Hundred tournament without needing to buy a controlling stake.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is eager to attract Indian investment and is allowing this even with just a minority share. This move could give IPL owners significant influence, with all 10 IPL owners expected to participate.

The Ambani family, owners of Mumbai Indians, are reportedly preparing a major bid for London Spirit. If successful, they may rebrand the team as MI London. Mumbai Indians already have teams in three other T20 leagues: MI Cape Town, MI New York, and MI Emirates. Their next goal is to expand into The Hundred, targeting the franchise based at Lord’s.

London Spirit is considered the most valuable team in the auction. The ECB aims to raise around £400 million by selling 49% of the eight franchises. Sources suggest that London Spirit alone could contribute to a quarter of the total revenue.

However, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), which may receive a 51% share in London Spirit from the ECB, is considering keeping its stake. The MCC members will vote on this decision at a special general meeting next month.

While London Spirit attracts the highest interest, the Oval Invincibles also draw attention due to their large fanbase and prime location. Surrey chairman Oli Slipper has hinted that the club may retain its 51% share, similar to the MCC’s potential decision.

The Invincibles are set to play in the men’s final on Sunday at Lord’s. They will face the winner of the eliminator between Birmingham Phoenix and Southern Brave. Meanwhile, in the women’s competition, Oval Invincibles will battle London Spirit on Saturday for a spot in the final against Welsh Fire.

Elsewhere, Rajasthan Royals are eyeing Northern Superchargers as part of their proposed investment in Yorkshire. Delhi Capitals are interested in Southern Brave and have already struck a £120 million deal to acquire Hampshire.

Birmingham City’s American owners, Knighthead Capital, are looking into Birmingham Phoenix. Their investors include NFL legend Tom Brady. They attended several matches of The Hundred this summer.

According to sources, IPL owners want some control over the teams they invest in. “It’s essentially a big brand play for the IPL. They will likely push for name changes based on their investment level,” a person involved in the sale process said.

The ECB has been in talks with potential investors, including notable figures like Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds and Manchester United owner Avram Glazer. The Raine Group, an American bank that managed the sales of United and Chelsea, will oversee the sales process for The Hundred. The governing body has already received approval from the counties to move forward next month.
